I have the benefit, and used to have the handicap, of a scientific training. I don’t believe anything, but have created a tentative and always evolving model of reality. As new evidence came in, my reality progressed from complete scepticism to seeing the Universe as alive, and made of the unconditional Love all the great religions and philosophies describe.

Janice Dolley’s account of her conversations with her friend Ursula Burton, before and after Lady Burton’s death, fit perfectly into my current model. I cannot treat it as evidence, because it is a personal claim that is only hearsay in the scientific sense, but it is the kind of thing that fits my understanding of Reality.

If you are open to a more complex yet simple, holistic and sacred view of reality, if you agree with me that death is not the end of a book but the end of a chapter, then Janice’s (and Ursula’s) book will speak to you.

Add to that the beautiful, clear, lyrical language, and a transparent honesty, and you can enjoy having your eyes opened (or, as with me, your established beliefs confirmed) in a most pleasant way.
All the same, the basic claim of conversations with a dead friend made me entertain the possibility that the book is a cleverly done fantasy. Even if it were, it presents Truth, and joining Janice’s Reality will make you into a better person. However, a simple internet search provided many bits of corroborative evidence, so I am confident that Janice honestly believes her account. As I said, my scientific training prevents me from saying more, but her account is so inspiring that it honestly doesn’t matter."

MORE ABOUT THE REVIEWER

Dr. Bob Rich is a visitor to this planet. At home, he is an historian of horrror which is why Earth is his favorite place in all the universe. It is the only place where sentient beings play a game where points are scored for the number of civilians killed (they call this “war”), where child-raising practices are designed to damage the children, and above all, where the global economy of an entire species is designed to destroy their life support system. This background is why he is interested in the opinions of another traveler, who has left, but still chatting with one of her friends. A Book About Depression for Everyone!

Title: From Depression to Contentment: A self-therapy guide
Author: Bob Rich, Ph.D.
Reviewer: Theresa Hortley I
Genre: Nonfiction: Psychology self-help
ISBN-13: 978-1-61599-435-9
Rating 5 stars

I don't suffer from depression, but read this book because I am privileged to be one of Bob Rich's beta readers. All the same, "From Depression to Contentment" has proven to be immensely useful to me personally.

Depression is everywhere. Every year, a distressingly high proportion of the kids I teach are obviously depressed. Friends, relatives, colleagues -- it's all around me. Now, I can understand where they are coming from, and can be more effective in helping them, though not as a therapist of course.

But this is far more than a self-help book. It is an inspiration. One sentence late in the book has captured me: "knowingly or unknowingly, all of us are apprentice Buddhas."

Depressed or not, if you read this book, you will become a better person.

You wouldn't expect a book about depression to be humorous, but in typical Bob Rich style, he got me chuckling time and again. Just one example: a patient told Bob that he'd known all his life that he didn't matter. Bob's reply: "Right. You crawled out of the womb believing you didn't matter?"

All of Bob's novels I've read are full of therapeutic lessons. Here is a book designed as a set of therapeutic lessons that is as enjoyable to read as any novel.

MORE ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Bob Rich, Ph.D. earned his doctorate in psychology in 1972. He worked as an academic, researcher, and applied scientist until “retiring” the first time at 36 years of age. Later, he returned to psychology and qualified as a Counseling Psychologist, running a private practice for over 20 years. During this time, he was on the national executive of the College of Counselling Psychologists of the Australian Psychological Society (APS), then spent three years as a Director of the APS. He was the therapist referrers sent their most difficult cases to.

Bob retired in 2013, but still does pro bono counseling over the internet. This has given him hundreds of “children” and “grandchildren” he has never met, because many of these people stay in touch for years. His major joy in life is to be of benefit to others, which is why he wrote a book that’s in effect a course of therapy.
You can get to know him well at his blog, "Bobbing Around," https://bobrich18.wordpress.com. Follow him on Twitter @bobswriting and find his newsletter at https://bobrich18.wordpress.com.

Extending the Power of Your Fave Review FREE

I received a note from a new author about this blog so I thought I'd share what a told her. She said (approximately):

"Carolyn:

I am new at this and trust that my higher power lead me to the right place."

This is my answer to her:

LOL. I think your higher power knows what it is doing!

Maybe we should take one thing at a time. I take it that all of this was written by you. In that case, I need permission that it is yours and that you give me permission. If not, I need assurance that whoever wrote it gives me permission.  I also need metadata on your book. Info on how to do that is in the side column of The New Book Review at http://TheNewBookReview.blogspot.com.  OR, you can copy the format of one of the reviews on that blog.  You can also include a biography with links to where your book is available.  And if a reviewer did wrote it for you, you can include a bio for them with links to their book or business. Everyone wins! You'll see that my own bio is at the bottom of each review--yes with links!

Then you send the whole shebang to me at HoJoNews@aol.com.  This is a free service so it must be a copy and paste effort for me. I know you will understand that.  But you'll also see how  liberal I am with information and links that can benefit writers everywhere. I want the blog to be a resource for names of reviewers, publisher, as well as good books to read. It helps (but isn't required) when all who participate also subscribe.

And right now you need help with reviews. As it happens Bookbaby.com is offering the third in my multi award-winning HowToDoItFrugally Series of books for writers as an e-book absolutely free.  Find it at http://Bookbaby.com. If you can't find it, sign up for their newsletter. It will be featured in many of those before October 30 when their free offer expires.  After that, How to Get Great Book Reviews Frugally and Ethically will be released on Amazon as a paper book and as an e-book on Kindle. Until then you can learn more about it on its new page on my Web site at http://bit.ly/HowToGetReviews. I am adding to it--slowly. (-:

This book includes all the hard-won secrets of review-getting--and I mean ALL--for my fiction, poetry, and nonfiction books.  I know you would also benefit from my The Frugal Book Promoter (some of it on reviews) at http://bit.ly/FrugalBookPromo
